Area Map

Nikko Toshogu Shrine
Nikko Toshogu Shrine is listed as one of the World Heritages representing Japan and is dedicated to Ieyasu Tokugawa, who founded Edo Bakufu.
The shrine was built 400 years ago by top-notch artisans across the country responding the call by Tokugawa government. This shrine has been keeping its everlasting beauty since then.
You can observe detailed covering using Japanese lacquer and rich painting in the magnificent shrine pavilion itself as well as in the delicate interior decorations. Pillars are decorated by a lot of elaborate curvings.
This shrine has “Five-story pagoda” and “Ishi-dorii” (Shinto gate made of stone) which are listed as Important Cultural Properties. Also, National Treasures of “Kara-mon gate” and “Sleeping Cat” are also worth appreciating.
In addition, you can’t miss “Nikko Toshogu Shrine Treasure House” which has been built close to the shrine; you can enjoy watching rare sacred treasures and more.
