Tono City is famous for its bucolic landscape, remaining the traditional ambience of the good old Japan. It is also known as the home of folktales where you can enjoy folktales and folk entertainments at the museum, House of Tono Story. Outside the city, in the middle of typical rural landscapes, several L-shaped farmhouses are spotted. These houses are called Magariya, or a curved house, and are unique to the region where winter weather is severely cold. A main house and a stable are connected in order to supply warm air from the main house to horses in the stable. At Chibake No Magariya, Chiba family’s residence, and Densho-Kan, old sake brewer, you can actually visit the Magariyas.
