Surrounded by the sea in all direction, it’s an island of mysteries and blessings. The ocean changes its appearance from morning to noon, to evening. On sunny days, you can enjoy the beautiful evening sun going down to the Sea of Japan, while in the fishing season you can see the fishing lights offshore. Sea bathing is good, too. Trekking is also very popular; you can feel the nature in softly blowing wind and the twitter of wild birds; from an easy course to harder courses, you can observe many huge trees and strangely shaped trees. Sado is rich in springheads, and you can experience a variety of hot springs throughout the island. One-third of all the Noh stages in Japan are concentrated in this island; Noh is an exceptionally popular traditional art in Sado. A representative local cuisine in Sado is the exciting fishermen’s dish with a full of sea foods. Sake and rice are very good, too. The local specialty “purikatsu-don” is exquisite. The island has once prospered as a big producer of gold, and now the locals are trying to apply for a World Heritage Registration.
