Tsuruga Castle

Great castle of Aizu-Wakamatsu, beautiful donjon with red roofing tiles.

Area Map

Tsuruga Castle
Tsuruga Castle, standing majestically in the city, distinguished itself as a robust castle after the intense battles during the Boshin War of 1868. However after the war, the castle was deconstructed because of heavy damages. The present building was rebuilt and restored about fifty years ago. Inside the donjon is a hometown museum where visitors can learn the history of Aizu Domain, the tragedy of Byakkotai (White Tiger Brigade), and so on. In 2011 the roofing tiles were renewed, making the castle the only existing castle with a donjon covered with red roofing tiles. As a designated National Historic Site, Tsuruga Castle is the symbol of Aizu-Wakamatsu City.
