Tono City Museum
Tono City Museum was founded in 1980 and is the first museum for folklore in Japan. Tono is rich in folktales and old tales, especially, Tono Monogatari, or Tono Story, which is authored by the late Yanagida Kunio who was a leading folklorist in Japan. This story is famous and has greatly influenced the impression of Tono City. Tono City Museum showcases “the world of Tono Story”, by using animation films and displays. At the First Show Room, the history and the inside story of Tono Story are explained. The Second Show Room exhibits materials and videos about the life of people in Tono. More than 100 image videos of folktales and local performing arts are also available.
