Fresh Fish from Shizuoka

Shizuoka Prefecture faces the Pacific Ocean and has a number of fishing ports, such as Numazu, Shimizu, Yaizu, and Maisaka, so naturally it’s got delicious fish! The type of fish available depends on the season, but from autumn, species like horse mackerel, hairtail, and red sea bream can be enjoyed. With a pinch of Shizuoka wasabi, they are wonderful as sashimi or sushi, or, if raw fish is not to your liking, you can enjoy fresh fish that have been grilled or stewed or cooked in a myriad other ways.

Shizuoka Wagyu

Shizuoka Wagyu is the brand name given to the finest quality beef raised by farmers with great care, and who live in open pastures breathing in the air of Mt. Fuji. The meat is tender, and its taste fills your mouth, making it a wonderful match for beer. We recommend choosing a nice simple cooking methods, like steak or yakiniku, to enjoy its full flavor, and just adding a pinch of salt from the deep ocean waters of Suruga Bay, or even a dab of wasabi as well.

Unagi (Eel)

Shizuoka is also famous for its unagi, or freshwater eel. Dishes prepared with eels raised in the eel farms of Lake Hamana or the Oi River basin are simply sublime. The eel, grilled to fluffy perfection at each restaurant, is usually served with a soy sauce-based sauce, but we recommend the “white-grilled” version, which is grilled with sake. White-grilled (shirayaki) eel is the best way to enjoy the true flavour of unagi, especially with a dab of Shizuoka’s special wasabi.
