Kanmangafuchi is located at the banks of Daiya River, about 15km east from the famous Kegon falls, a 98m waterfall and the symbol of Nikko. When Mt, Nantai erupted 7000 years ago the larva flowed into the river. The water flow has eroded the larva in a unique shape over time. The contrast between uniquely shaped rocks and limpid river flow is beyond description, especially, early summer, the season of fresh green, and autumn, the season of colored leaves are the most beautiful. It was named after the sound of the rapid water in Daiya River which is similar to the word “Kanman,” the true word of the God of fire, and “gafuchi” means a deep pool, thus “Kanmangafuchi.” On the southern bank, many moss-covered Jizos, the guardian deity of children, are standing silently. Each time you count their numbers they mysteriously never be matched, therefore they are called Bakejizo, or phantom jizo.
