Recommendation for the "Onzoshi Kiyoyasu-tei"

Recommendation for the "Young Master Kiyoyasu Residence"
① The unique atmosphere of an old-fashioned inn
The store is located in the basement next to the main street in the center of Roppongi, with a very low-key appearance. One would not expect to find such a shop in the bustling city center. As you walk down the stairs, you will see an entrance resembling a "ryotei" (traditional Japanese restaurant), with lighting, umbrellas, and a small pond decor, along with a welcoming mural of Mount Fuji and wooden folding doors, all of which heighten the sense of anticipation.

After entering, you need to take off your shoes. The seating in the store consists of private rooms, allowing you to dine in a space filled with privacy. The room I used that day was adjacent to the scenic pond in the store, which had swimming koi fish, as well as a landscaped garden with artificial hills and flowers, exuding a low-key luxurious Japanese style.

When overseas tourists come to Japan, they may not be accustomed to sitting on tatami floors. The floor here is called "掘りごたつ", which is a sunken seating area with a recess for resting the feet, allowing diners to relax their legs while eating without having to sit cross-legged or kneel. It is a very thoughtful and comfortable design.

Another private room that can accommodate up to 4 people, with a similarly quiet and comfortable atmosphere, and the lighting also helps to relax.

The corridor inside the store also passes by a pond, just like appreciating the design of a garden in a traditional Japanese house, and it feels like walking into an art museum.

② A variety of set meals made with seasonal ingredients
If you don't know where to start when making a reservation, I suggest ordering a set menu based on the number of people, which is foolproof. Depending on different budgets, there are various dishes made with seasonal ingredients, such as Wagyu beef, seafood, and teppanyaki, prepared in different ways. It's suitable for anniversaries or important days, and I also recommend making reservations for larger groups.
③ The store location is excellent, suitable for visiting before and after sightseeing.
Located in the center of Roppongi, there are shopping attractions such as Roppongi Hills and Tokyo Midtown, and nearby are cultural spots like the National Art Center and 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, making it perfect for dinner after shopping or visiting museums. The store is just a 1-minute walk from Roppongi Station, and it is very convenient to come from various places in Tokyo, including Shinjuku and Ginza.

This time I tasted a course (Lan course) that costs 18,000 yen per person, including various items such as teppanyaki and sushi. It consists of a total of 8 dishes: Japanese appetizers, sashimi, two types of teppanyaki, hot pot, fried items, sushi, and fruits. Everything, from the presentation to the tableware, is exquisite and looks luxurious.

The first appetizers on the table include marinated tofu dregs, smoked salmon, salmon roe, myoga, boiled fava beans, Tosa-style simmered bamboo shoots, and braised beef tendon, served in several small dishes. The flavors are relatively light, making for a nice opening. The braised beef tendon is cooked very tender and melts in your mouth, which is my favorite dish.

The following sashimi platter includes firefly squid (hotaru-ika), tuna, and shrimp, all very fresh. The richness and flavor of the tuna left a lasting impression on me, and I also look forward to different sashimi in different seasons.

The third dish is grilled abalone on a hot plate, using high-quality black abalone, accompanied by abalone liver cream sauce. The creamy aroma can be smelled from afar before it is served, which is truly an exaggerated fragrance. It is still steaming when it arrives at the table, making one's appetite surge. The abalone is already cut into pieces, making it very easy to eat. When you bite into it, the meat is tender and chewy, and the aroma and richness of the liver cream sauce burst into your mouth, creating a very rich layer of flavors. This dish is the most memorable one in the set menu.

The presentation of the hot pot is equally exquisite and eye-catching, featuring crab claws as the main ingredient, accompanied by cabbage, shiitake mushrooms, tofu, and more. The meat of the crab claws is fresh, sweet, and tender, while the broth of the hot pot is clear and sweet, not overpowering the flavors of the ingredients, allowing one to savor the original taste of various ingredients, making it a perfect transition between the two types of teppanyaki.

The next dish is a teppanyaki featuring two types of black-haired wagyu beef served with vegetables, using Sendai beef. Among Japanese wagyu, Sendai beef is renowned for its excellent meat quality. Wagyu is graded based on various strict standards such as meat quality, color, and fat distribution, and only those that reach A5 or B5 grades can be shipped under the name "Sendai beef." With so many brands of wagyu, the fact that "Sendai beef" is the only one defined by such standards represents high quality. Sendai beef is produced in Miyagi Prefecture in the Tohoku region, making it quite rare to taste it in the heart of Tokyo.

The beef is delicious simply seasoned with salt or wasabi, cooked to perfection, juicy, and although it has a lot of fat, it doesn't feel greasy. I prefer to dip it in salt, which enhances the beef's freshness, or enjoy it with garlic slices for a richer flavor.

The tempura platter that follows includes fried shrimp, bamboo shoots, and sweet peas. The batter is fried to a fragrant crispness without being greasy, and the fried shrimp retains its bouncy texture. Simply dipping it in salt enhances the shrimp's ocean flavor, making it my favorite among the dishes. Bamboo shoots and sweet peas are also seasonal vegetables, and frying ingredients with high moisture content requires a very high level of skill.

During the meal, you can also enjoy various decorations in a tranquil dining environment with Japanese aesthetics, which will surely leave a deep impression on overseas tourists.

As the end of the set meal approaches, the staff presents a sushi platter along with red miso soup. The sushi includes tuna sashimi, squid, shrimp, and anago (sea eel). The tuna's red meat has less fat, allowing for a richer fish flavor, while the squid has a very soft texture, providing a chewy yet refreshing bite. Notably, the anago, lightly brushed with sauce, differs from eel in its oiliness; its meat is soft and fluffy while still offering a refreshing taste. Although it is the final dish, it leaves one wanting more. The red miso soup served with the sushi is not overly salty, and drinking it after finishing the sushi is warm and satisfying.

Finally, the staff served fruits and hot tea, with honeydew and mango. The honeydew is fragrant, sweet, juicy, and refreshing, while the mango has a slight sourness. Taking another sip of hot tea is the perfect ending to the whole meal.
The entire set menu features a variety of carefully crafted dishes, focusing on the original flavors of the ingredients and seasonal produce. The seasoning does not overpower the ingredients, allowing the seasonal atmosphere to be felt, which is the essence of Japanese cuisine. You can enjoy a range of dishes including teppanyaki, sushi, and hot pot all at once, presented luxuriously, and enjoyed in a private room. The whole experience is very satisfying, and the dining atmosphere is quite pleasant, making one momentarily forget the hustle and bustle of the city.

Which groups are recommended?
The "Onzoshi Kiyoyasu-tei" may seem a bit high-end and difficult to approach from the outside, but in reality, it is very approachable. It is highly recommended for those visiting Japan for the first time and wanting to experience high-end Japanese cuisine to make a reservation and come to taste it. All seats are private rooms, making it especially suitable for couples, spouses, and important occasions such as anniversary celebrations. I believe the prices for the set menus are transparent and easy to understand, so even those who have never tried a Japanese set menu can come with peace of mind. The prices are also within a reasonable range, and pairing drinks with meals is a recommended way to enjoy Japanese cuisine. You can add a 2-hour all-you-can-drink option, enjoying non-alcoholic beverages or alcoholic drinks.

conclusion

Conclusion
I first learned about "Kiyoyasu Residence" in Kamakura, but I had only seen photos of the store. This time, when I actually visited the Roppongi location, I found that the decor was completely different. I felt that the atmosphere of the Roppongi store was very nice, relaxed like a ryokan, and it would be a place I would want to take friends who visit Tokyo. It is also very suitable to be included in the same itinerary as other Tokyo attractions. Even if you don't speak Japanese, you can make reservations and choose a set menu in Chinese, English, or Korean on the SAVOR JAPAN page!
