Izumi City is located at the border between Kagoshima Prefecture and Kumamoto Prefecture, and is known as the world No.1 home for migratory cranes. From October to March, more than 1,000 cranes come from Siberia and spend the winter season at Izumi City. Crane Observation Center is open from November to March, where you can take a close look at cranes. This is a major tourism attraction. Izumi is also famous for cluster of historic buildings. At Fumoto-cho area, samurai residences remain intact and are on display such as Izumi Okariyamon, or the gate for residential compound, and Takesoe Family Residence.
