Area Map

Kirishima Mountains are the first designated National park in Japan. Kirishima City has magnificent nature and abundant hot springs, what’s more, mythical image, which is derived from the myth of Ninigi-no-mikoto, the grandson of goddess Amaterasu-omikami. Ninigi-no-mikoto is enshrined in Kirishima Jingu shrine and Kagoshima Jingu shrine. The volcanic activities of Kirishima Mountains have formed Shirasu Plateau, the sediment of volcanic ash, which is suitable to cultivate sweet potatoes. One of the popular local products, Imojochu, or sweet potato distilled liquor, is made from sweet potatoes. Some brewers exhibit the brewing process and you can taste brand-new shochu on the spot. With grand scale of the volcano and mythical atmosphere, Kirishima is a place well worth a visit.
