In addition to the rich nature of the sea, rivers and mountains, the city boasts many historic sites that are designated National Cultural Properties. At the foot of Mt. Shodai is a hot spring that boasts the long history of 1,300 years and the exceptional spring quality. Oama hot spring on the orange hill looking down the Ariake Sea is famous as the stage of a distinguished novelist Natsume Soseki’s masterpiece “Kusamakura.” It is also known as an attractive hot spring resort. The city produces many specialties such as tomatoes, oranges, and strawberries, and there are facilities you can experience fruits picking. Another very famous local specialty is Tamana ramen based on a rich tonkotsu soup and fried garlic chips. There are many exciting events including an overwhelmingly powerful festival Otawara Matsuri, too. You can never miss it.
