Unzen
The first National Park in Japan where you can experience both volcano and hot springs.
Area Map
Unzen is located to the west of Mt. Fugen in the Shimabara Peninsula. It's a place of tragic history of the Christian persecution. However, after Japan was opened to the world, the place has made a good success as a high class summer report. At the beginning of the Showa Period it was designated as a National Park. Ever since the park has been loved by many visitors both from inside and outside Japan. The center of Unzen is the “Unzen Hell” where heat steam is gushing out from fumaroles. There are about thirty “hells" with which you can feel the throb of the earth. After your busy sightseeing activities, it is a good idea to take a relaxing hot spring at the hot spring district around the Unzen Hell area -- Unzen is a place where you can experience the throb of the earth, seasonal transitions, and relaxing hot springs all at the same time.
