Kanamaru-za, former Kompira-Oshibai

Kanamaru-za is the oldest kabuki playhouse in Japan. It was built in 1835 for pilgrims to Konpiragu, who wanted to sooth their trekking-fatigue by entertainment. Konpira-Oshibai, a kabuki performance, was played in the playhouse, which used to be a national landmark of entertainment and many famous actors were eager to play on the stage. This tradition is still alive now. In April many top kabuki actors are on stage for Shikoku-Konpira-Kabuki-Oshibai since 1985 and mesmerize kabuki fans throughout the nation. The Kanamaru-za has kept its shape for 200 years and you should witness the history of the traditional Japanese entertainment. It is even on display on the no-performing days.
