Area Map

Tomioka
The most famous site in the city is the Tomioka Silk Mill which was registered as a world heritage "Tomioka Silk Mill and Related Sites" in 2014. The mill was built more than 150 years ago, as the first full-scale mechanical silk mill in Japan. The huge brick building in front of the entrance is a warehouse for cocoons. The building, combining the western technology and the eastern technology, was one of the biggest mills in the world. You can learn the history of the mill with the guided tour (fee required). You can also use a free guide on your mobile device.
