Area Map

Kanrantei

Kanrantei was originally a part of a feudal lord’s residence and was moved to Matusima by a ship. The meaning of kanran is to watch wavelets, so to speak, it moved to Matsushima as a viewing point for wavelets. It is also known to be the view point of the moon. Every year Otsukimikai, a moon-watching party, is held at the season of a harvest moon. According to a historical record, Kanrantei was used as a hotel and a party hall to the officials of the Edo government. The building next to it is Matsushima Museum which exhibits treasures, arms, ornaments and calligraphies of the Date Clan, the feudal lord of the Sendai domain.
