Aoshima Island is a small island surrounded by strangely shaped rocks called “Oni-no-Sentakuiwa,” literally “wash-rocks of ogres.” Because Aoshima is a land-tied-island, you can easily access it with a bridge that connects the island to the Aoshima bathing beach. Despite the size, the tiny island accommodates as many as over 5,000 Bero (Livistona chinensis) trees and more than 200 types of subtropical plants. The island is designated as a Special natural Monument. At the center of the island sits Aoshima Shrine. With a history of 1,200 years, the god of the shrine is said to have a power of matchmaking. The vermilion-lacquered gate and shrine building which suddenly appear in the deep forest of subtropical plants give you a unique scenery you can seldom experience in Japan, full of tropical ambience.
