Surrounded by a large forest, Miyazaki Jingu shrine was built to enshrine the first emperor, Jinmu. The forest is a wild birds’ paradise and you can enjoy bird-watching. Many events are held there, attracting visitors from all over Japan. At Miyazaki Jingu Festival every October, a parade of people in ancient costume stroll around the city, and at the Yabusame field in the precincts, Yabusame, or horseback archery, is performed on April 3 every year. The local specialty at Miyazaki Jingu is Sanpai-mochi, or shrine's rice cake. Sanpai-mochi is sold from 6:00 a.m. on the 1st day of every month. The rice cake sold is different every month, made from carefully selected, different ingredients.
