Hikone Castle

A castle with 400 years of history, the white-walled donjon is a National Treasure.

The construction was launched in 1604 and took 20 years to complete, Hikone Castle was renovated again in 1996 for the fifth times since it was built. Tiles of the roof, 60 thousands in 34 types, and white walls were facelifted. It is one of the most well-preserved castles in Japan and the tower, turrets, such as Nishinomaru-sanju-yagura, Taikomon-yagura, Tenbin-yagura, Ninomaru-sawaguchitamon-yagura, and stables are designated as Important Cultural Properties. The landscape garden, Genkyu-en and Rakuraku-en, are designated as Special Historic Sites. Now Hikonyan, a popular local mascot character, is performing in the castle on events three times a month.
