Gujo-Hachiman Castle
One of the most beautiful mountain castles in Japan
with a beautiful view of the castle town.
Area Map

It is not widely known, but most of the castles in Japan have been rebuilt with modern materials such as concrete.
Gujo-Hachiman castle, however, is not such a rebuilt castle. It was once destroyed in 1872 when the age of samurais ended, but it was reconstructed in 1933 with traditional wooden architecture techniques.
Now the castle is a landmark of Okumino Gunjo town as one of the most beautiful mountain castles in Japan, attracting many tourists. Cherry blossoms in full bloom in spring. Fresh verdure in summer. Beautiful red and yellow leaves in fall. Blanket of snow in winter. The castle shows you different scenery by season and by time of day. Every time you visit here, you will find new facets that attract you.
