Kasuga Taisha Shrine

A World Heritage shrine surrounded by
clear and dignified atmosphere.

Area Map

Kasuga Taisha Shrine
The elegant and beautiful main building of Kasuga Taisha shrine was built in 768 at the present site, for the prosperity of the nation and happiness of its people. Ever since the foundation, the halls' bright vermillion columns, white walls, and roofs of hinoki cypress bark contrast beautifully with the green of the surrounding ancient woods. There are many spots worth a visit in the precinct, including the main shrine that has been designated as a National Treasure, Wakamiya shrine and Meoto-Daikokusha shrine. Walking on the main approach from the first torii gate to the shrine surrounded by the nature and historic ambience will give you a relaxing time. In 1988, the "Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara" including Kasuga Taisha was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Just like in ancient times, services are offered every morning and evening, and about 2,200 festivals are held here annually.
