Area Map

Rakuyaki (raku ware) was created by Senno-Rikyu, the founder of Japanese Tea Ceremony. Akahikogama is a pottery that has long been concentrating its focus only on Rakuyaki. The present successor who conveys Rikyu's philosophy to this day and keeps the pottery is the third Kato Ryusei. He is keeping the pottery every day to reach the supreme state of mind Rikyu sought for, wabi, the essence of detachment and simplicity.
At Akahikogama you can experience ceramic arts and make your own pottery. That is one of the highlights the pottery offers. You can take the exclusive lesson directly from Master Ryusei. You don’t use a potter’s wheel with Rakuyaki; you form your work by hand. It seems easy to do at first glance, but you will soon realize the depth and complexity. It is said that the handwork is a reflection of the mind of the person, so it’s well worth trying to find out your inner self.
