Eiheiji Temple

Eiheiji Temple, opened in 1244, is one of the most famous sightseeing spots in Fukui together with Tojinbo. The vast area embraces as many as about seventy facilities for Zen training including the main gate, Buddha Hall, Dharma Hall, Priests’ Hall and the Kitchen. You must feel a solemn atmosphere when you walk through the path between big trees of more than 600 years old. No wonder. At Eiheiji Temple, Zen monks are under rigorous Zen training based on strict rules that were defined 750 years ago when the temple was opened. So tours in the precincts are under certain restrictions; you have to receive an explanation and instructions from trainee monks before go around the precincts.
