Area Map

During the Boshin War of 1868, a rebellion against the newly formed government, Aizu Domain fought on the old government side, and organized four brigades consisting of twenty young people around 16-17 yo. One of the brigades, Byakkotai (White Tiger Brigade), was run down to the mountain, and they committed harakiri suicide - only one survived. Because of the tragic story of those young warriors, many people visit the grave from all over Japan throughout the year to pray for their peaceful sleep. In spring and fall a memorial service is held at the site and a sword dance is presented to ease the spirits of the young warriors. The way up to the grave is long, but you can take an escalator with 250 JPY.
