Okayama Castle was built in 1597 by Ukita Hideie who had governed Bizen, an old name of Okayama. It took eight years to complete and one of the precursors of modern-style castle as well as Osaka Castle and Hiroshima Castle. The foundation of the donjon is a scalene octagonal, which is very rare, and black boards on the walls make its appearance look like a raven therefore it called Ujo, or Raven Castle. The donjon, a National Treasure then, was burned down in the World War II and the present donjon is built for three-story with six-floor complex. At the basement the picture scroll of the Sengoku-era is exhibited, and on the first floor the workshop for Bizen-yaki, a local ceramic, a souvenir shop and restaurant are placed. From 2nd to 6th floors, many documents for the history of the castle and episodes are exhibited. At the top floor, you can enjoy the all-direction magnificent view.
