Standing next to Tokyo Tower, Zojoji temple is one of the biggest and oldest temple in Japan, built about 600 years ago. The main entrance gate Sangedatsumon, a national important cultural property, is one of the largest temple gate in eastern Japan, retaining the architectural characteristics of the beginning of the Edo Period. The temple is widely known as the burial place of shoguns, and is open to the public for a couple of times a year. You can check it out on the web site before your visit. In September you can witness the beauty of the takigi noh (noh play performed at night by a fire) performed on a specially prepared noh stage in the precincts.
