Well-known and loved by the nickname "Sanno-san"
, Hie Shrine was constructed more than 500 years ago as the guardian deity of Edo (ancient Tokyo). The annual festival held in June, Sanno festival, is one of the three major festivals in Japan together with the Gion Festival in Kyoto and the Tenjin Festival in Osaka. At the festival 500 people in traditional costume parades through Tokyo solemnly. The festival parade has kept on witnessing the dramatic shift of Tokyo as the townscape has evolved from the Edo period to modern Tokyo. The historic parade in the global city of Tokyo may give you a time travel-like experience.
