Itsukushima shrine, famous for its characteristic red tori archway standing in the middle of the ocean, is said to have been built about 1,500 years ago. Though many of its buildings have been rebuilt after experiencing disasters in the long history, its appearance remains as they were at the time of its foundation. As the tide comes in, the main building looks as if it were floating on the ocean. The combination of the green mountains, blue sky, and the red buildings reflected on the ocean makes a solemn yet breathtakingly beautiful sight. Many buildings in the precincts are designated national treasures or important cultural properties. Itsukushima, also called Miyajima, is one of the three great views of Japan - it’s well worth a visit.
