Area Map

Koyasan

The religious city of Koyasan was founded by Kobo Daishi (Kukai), a legendary priest.
It was founded as a place for Buddhist training and ascetic practices some 1,200 years ago. This sacred site of religious faith is surrounded by Koyasan’s 8 peaks including Kongo, Shoto, and Sanno peaks. The landscape was designed as if the Buddha is cross-legging in the middle of lotus flowers. There are a total of 117 temples in Koyasan including Kongobuji temple, the head temple of esoteric Japanese religion. It looks like an empyreal religious city. In the mountain you can see many historic sites such as Inner sanctuary and Danjo garan, two holiest sites, 52 Syukubo, or lodging temples, and the precinct of Kongobuji and Koyasan stone maker path, pilgrim path which are registered World Heritage Sites.
