Area Map

Fushimi Inari is the head shrine of several thousands of shrines all over Japan that enshrine Inari (or "Oinari-san"), the Shinto god of rice. The shrine has long been worshipped as the god of bumper crop, prosperity in business, peace in the household and realization of dreams. "Oyama-meguri," a circuit pilgrimage going around the holy places on the Mount Inari is about 4 kilometers long (2.5 miles). On the main approach to the shrine, the tunnel formed by thousands of vermilion torii gates makes a magnificent sight. From the Sunday closest to April 20 to May 3, the biggest festival of the shrine "Inari Festival" is held - the annual festival has been held since the Heian Period 1,200 years ago. The portable shrine carried around Kyoto Station area during the festival period is one of the most beautiful and elegant shrine parades in Japan, and it is recognized as a very important event. In November, Hitaki Festival is held to send the gods of grains back to the mountains after the harvest. In the festival hundreds of thousands of bonfires are burned for good fortunes.
