Oki Island

Oki Island was formed by a large volcanic action about six million years ago. Ancient people dwelt on the island some 30,000 years ago, and there are evidences that they were exporting the material of stone tools, obsidian, to Hokuriku and Shikoku regions. Then the island became a place of exile for high rank political offenders including the emperor because it was thought the life for those political offenders on the island was harmless due to the abundance of water and foods. During the Edo Period, a unique culture was nurtured as a trading port. So Oki Island has a unique scenery and ecosystem that is specific to a volcanic island combined with a history of human interaction and traditional cultures. There are many spots worth a visit.
