Sado Magistrate's Office Remains

Remains that tell us how the gold mine was operated and how the people there lived.

Area Map

Sado Magistrate's Office Remains
Sado Magistrate’s Office was built in 1603 to manage and control the Sado Gold Mine that supported the financial base of the Edo Shogunate. It was the center of Sado’s administration and judicature. The building has been destroyed by fire for five times, and each time it was reconstructed. After the Meiji Restoration the building played an important role as a municipal office or a school. It was designated as a National Historic Site, but in 1942, it was completely destroyed by fire. However, in 1994, it was designated as a National Historic Site again that triggered a movement to protect and maintain the valuable site, and the building was restored based on the original drawings, documents, and excavation research reports. Now the site is open to the public as a part of Sado Gold/Silver Mine Remains. Many valuable materials excavated from the ruins are displayed.
