Mt. Misen

A power spot in MIyajima Island (Itsukushima Island).
Worshipped for a long time as a mountain where gods live.

Area Map

Mt. Misen
Misen is the highest mountain in Miyajima island where the famous Itsukushima Shrine is located. With a megalithic group deliberately arranged around the summit area, it is thought that the mountain has long been worshipped as a sanctuary of Japanese mountain asceticism-shamanism. A Buddhist temple was built in 806, and the fire lighted at that time is said to have been still burning, for more than 1,200 years. The hot water boiled with the fire is believed to be a panacea, and people are continuously coming to take it. It is still a popular power spot.
The height of the mountain is 535m (approx. 1,755 ft). It's not a high mountain, but with the rough and steep trail, it takes about two hours to climb to the summit. When you are climbing the mountain, you should watch out for wild monkeys, deer, and hornets. Maybe it's a good idea for people who climb the mountain for the first time to take the ropeway.
