Famous for its fantastical artistic worldviews and immersive experiences such as projection mapping, "NAKED" is a creative company whose experiential restaurant TREE by NAKED yoyogi park has undergone a renewal this spring, attracting even more attention. The reason it garners interest not only domestically but also abroad lie in the dining experience that stimulates all five senses and captivating its guests.
The Gateway to the Art of Dining Experience
Just a one-minute walk from Yoyogi Park Station, a restaurant unfolds in a large glass building that stretches up to the upper floors, filled with large trees and seasonal flowers and plants creating a fantastical world. Even just walking outside can pique one's curiosity about this place, identified as TREE by NAKED yoyogi park. As soon as one steps inside, the "story" that visitors will experience at the restaurant begins.
This restaurant, which includes the name of the creative company NAKED, INC., is often associated with words like VR and projection mapping. The immersive experiences created by NAKED, INC., involving video and music that transform the surrounding space into art, appeal to all five senses and have continuously attracted attention both domestically and internationally, not to mention on social media.
At TREE by NAKED yoyogi park, the comprehensive direction of these productions is handled by Ryotaro Muramatsu, the founder of NAKED, INC. and also an artist. In 2023, he was responsible for the social dinner at the G7 Hiroshima Summit, and TREE by NAKED yoyogi park has become a permanent restaurant where one can experience this art course.
Weaving stories, a new sensory immersive experience
Upon entering through the open entrance, the first thing guests are guided to is the counter, where a projection mapping show is already set up, displaying welcome drinks inspired by the elements 'earth, fire, water, wind'.
Guests are then led down stairs that lead to the basement, passing through a pathway designed to resemble stepping stones, and into a waiting room where a table set in a 'Karesansui' (dry landscape) style awaits.
...And what appears before them is a "Spirit of the Tree". The tree spirit, projected through mapping technology, becomes the storyteller, guiding guests into the world of the upcoming art course.
The "TREE DINNER COURSE 'Kaleidoscope of Life'" is an exclusive dining experience limited to 8 guests per day, featuring seven dishes plus one dessert, accompanied by a choice of alcoholic or non-alcoholic pairing drinks. This art course is crafted around the story of the world emerging from the four fundamental elements: earth, fire, water, and air, expressed through food and art. Guests may not realize it, but the story begins the moment they are welcomed with a drink at the entrance. The restaurant's interior is designed to resemble a tree, spanning from the basement first floor to the second floor above ground. Diners start their meal on the floor representing the 'roots' of the tree, and the journey culminates in the 'paradise' at the top floor where dessert is served, aligning with the narrative's progression. Guided by the spirit of the tree, guests immerse themselves in this world, experiencing the concept with all their senses.
After the story in the waiting room, guests are led to the main room located on the same basement level. Here, a series of dining art experiences unfold one after another.
Introducing a part of the art course, "TREE DINNER COURSE 'Kaleidoscope of Life'" - an 'Eating Art Experience'
We are pleased to introduce a part of the course composed of 'Amuse', 'Earth', 'Fire', 'Water', 'Wind', 'Universe', 'Tie Up', and 'Dessert'. (The content of the dishes and the pairing drinks change seasonally.)
"Earth": "Hairy Crab Consommé with Tomato Farce, Bagna Cauda Sauce, and Mixed Herb Salad"
Initially, a plate piled with soil and small rice stalks is brought in front of the guest. They tear the stalks and till the soil, then put on the VR goggles placed in front of their seat and enter the world of VR. The story continues even inside the VR, and once the goggles are removed, the ingredients that appeared in the video have transformed into a dish, right there. It's a delightful plate that offers an immersive experience, making one feel as if they are stepping into the story's world, filled with continuous surprises and enjoyment.
Fire: BBQ Pulled Pork Tostada with Paprika Sauce
Projection mapping envelops the entire wall in flames, giving birth to the sun. The dish brought before them also features a fiercely burning sun, with pulled pork arranged around a central tortilla. The menu item named 'Tostada' is a soul food from the chef's native Texas, which has been adapted for the high-end restaurant. It is served with a fruity pineapple salsa and crunchy micro cilantro, atop the tortilla along with the richly simmered pulled pork that has been cooked for 16 hours.
"Water": "Grilled Red Snapper with Scales"
From the deep-sea world depicted on the plate through projection mapping, the view of the ocean expands dramatically. After experiencing this, one can enjoy the "Red Snapper with Crispy Scales," a dish that delights with its firm flesh and the crispy texture of the scales. It is served with a puree of shiso leaves.
Experience unique Japanese culture
The restaurant has been increasingly gaining attention from foreign tourists visiting Japan recently. Depending on the season, experiences such as grating one's own Wasabi are offered, embedding elements of 'Wa' (Japanese culture) throughout. This integration of Japanese culture is one of the reasons why the restaurant is enjoyed by both domestic and international visitors. Additionally, the narration by the spirit of the tree is available in either Japanese or English, tailored to the guests present on the day.
A restaurant where art, technology and cuisine merge to offer an 'edible art experience'. This spring, the restaurant has been renovated and further enhanced with a powerful art dinner course. Why not enjoy it with all five senses alongside the seasonal transitions of Yoyogi Park?
