Why Visit Kita-Kamakura?

While most visitors head directly to Kamakura's famous Great Buddha and Komachi Street, many skip Kita-Kamakura, a mistake if you enjoy quiet neighborhoods, beautiful temples, and discovering places at your own pace.
Kita-Kamakura feels like stepping back in time. Instead of crowded shopping streets, you'll find winding roads lined with hydrangeas, traditional wooden houses, hidden cafés, and temple gates surrounded by towering cedar trees. It is one of my favorite day trips from Tokyo because everything is within walking distance, making it easy to spend a relaxing day exploring without rushing from place to place.
From Tokyo Station, the journey takes approximately one hour via JR Yokosuka Line, and from Kita-Kamakura Station, most attractions are less than a 10-minute walk away.

Helpful Tips Before You Visit
　・Visit on a weekday if possible, especially during hydrangea and autumn foliage seasons.
　・Arrive early to enjoy the temples before tour groups arrive.
　・Bring cash, as several cafés, temples, and small shops do not accept credit cards.
　・Some local shops have limited opening days, so check before visiting.

1. Engaku-ji Temple – One of Kamakura's Great Zen Temples

Founded in 1282 by Regent Hojo Tokimune after the Mongol invasions, Engaku-ji is one of Kamakura's most important Zen temples and one of the Five Great Zen Temples of Kamakura.

At first glance, the entrance appears fairly modest, and I honestly didn't expect much. However, once I stepped inside, I realized just how enormous the temple grounds actually are. The complex stretches across the hillside and is filled with historic temple buildings, peaceful gardens, bamboo groves, and stone pathways that invite you to slow down and explore.

One of my favorite surprises was discovering several places to take a break. The temple has both a traditional tea house where visitors can enjoy Japanese matcha and sweets, as well as a café with beautiful views overlooking Kamakura. After exploring the temple grounds, be sure to stop by for a relaxing break and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.

Don't miss taking a look at the Shariden, a National Treasure, or visiting the impressive Sanmon Gate, one of the largest wooden temple gates in Japan. Note that while you can usually only view the Shariden from the outside, it opens to the public three times a year (during New Year's, Golden Week in May, and around Cultural Day in November).

2. Meigetsuin Temple – Beautiful in Every Season

Often called the Hydrangea Temple, Meigetsuin is famous throughout Japan for the thousands of blue hydrangeas that bloom along its pathways every June.
During hydrangea season the temple becomes extremely popular, and long queues are common. If you're visiting during this period, arriving shortly after opening is highly recommended.

Although the hydrangeas receive most of the attention, Meigetsuin is worth visiting throughout the year.

The temple gardens transform with every season, from fresh greenery in spring to vibrant maple leaves in autumn, and the famous circular window known as the "Window of Enlightenment" beautifully frames the changing scenery outside.

The peaceful moss gardens and bamboo groves make this one of the most photogenic spots in Kita-Kamakura.

3. Yoh Shomei Art Museum

Hidden among the quiet residential streets is the Yoh Shomei Art Museum, dedicated to one of Japan's best-loved picture book illustrators.

Unlike larger museums, this intimate gallery creates a calm atmosphere where visitors can appreciate Yoh Shomei's gentle watercolor paintings inspired by nature, childhood, and peaceful rural life. Even if you're unfamiliar with his work, the artwork perfectly complements the relaxed feeling of Kita-Kamakura.
The museum itself is small enough to visit in under an hour, making it an easy stop during your walk.

4. Kitakamakura Old Private House Museum

For travelers interested in traditional Japanese architecture, the Kitakamakura Old Private House Museum is a hidden gem.
The beautifully preserved wooden residence is over 100 years old and regularly hosts seasonal exhibitions featuring ceramics, textiles, calligraphy, and traditional Japanese crafts.
Walking through the house offers a glimpse into everyday life during Japan's past, while the carefully maintained garden changes beautifully with each season.
Unlike many museums, this one feels warm and lived in, making it an enjoyable stop even for visitors who aren't particularly interested in history.

5. Relax at Charming Local Cafés and Browse Artisan Shops

After spending the morning exploring temples, reward yourself with coffee and homemade desserts at one of Kita-Kamakura's cozy cafés.

Cast On

Just a two-minute walk from Kita-Kamakura Station, Cast On is one of those cafés you'll want to linger in.

Run by an elegant owner who bakes everything herself, the café feels welcoming from the moment you step inside. The homemade scones are absolutely delicious—crispy on the outside, soft inside, and perfect alongside a freshly brewed coffee or tea.

It's the ideal place to slow down before continuing your walk around town.

Wabisuke

Located inside a beautifully renovated traditional Japanese house, Wabisuke offers a peaceful café experience that perfectly matches the atmosphere of Kita-Kamakura.
Whether you choose Japanese sweets with matcha or a light lunch, dining while overlooking the garden is a wonderful way to escape the crowds and enjoy a slower pace of travel.

Sumire-do

If you're looking for meaningful souvenirs, don't miss Sumire-do.

This small charity shop sells handmade ceramics, Kamakura-bori lacquerware, accessories, and handcrafted gifts created by local artisans. Rather than a permanent storefront, Sumire-do opens as a pop-up exhibition twice a year, during spring and early summer (around June). It is located a short, 4-minute walk from Kita-Kamakura Station (JR Yokosuka Line). To find it, take the exit closest to Engakuji Temple, walk along the tracks, and turn into the quiet side alley just past the temple grounds. Keep an eye out for their signature dog-themed sign marking the entrance.

Even better, all proceeds support charities helping rescued cats and dogs, making every purchase contribute to a good cause.

For travelers hoping to sample regional specialties, Wasai Yakura is an excellent introduction to Kamakura cuisine.
